Pride protests strain America’s multicultural project

June 19, 2023 - 11:53am

Earlier this month, the White House unfurled a Progress Pride flag flanked by two national flags. This prompted some to read the act as symbolising defeat of the Stars and Stripes by a new ruling ideology. Republican Senator Roger Marshall introduced a new bill to ban government buildings from flying any flag except the national one.

But it’s not just conservatives who are unconvinced by the triumph of Pride. A number of groups that have, until relatively recently, been viewed unambiguously as allies by the broader progressive project have begun to voice their dissent at the new rainbow supremacy.

Foremost, we find growing signs that Muslims — a group symbolised (sometimes surreally) in “inclusive” visuals and routinely co-opted as Leftist allies — may have a few questions about Pride. Footage circulated recently of Canadian Muslim children being encouraged by their parents to stamp on Pride flags, prompting an outbreak of startlingly Colonel Blimp-ish progressive calls to “send them home”. Meanwhile, the Guardian reported the “sense of betrayal” experienced by those liberals who had previously celebrated the first Muslim-majority council, in Hamtramck, Michigan, after that council instituted a city-wide ban on Pride insignia.

Nor is this the only way the broader multicultural project finds itself in tension with the rainbow worldview. Under Progress Pride ideology, a woman is anyone who says they’re a woman, a belief that’s now enforceable by law in Washington State. But the Korean owner of women-only Olympus Spa disagrees, on very multicultural grounds. Olympus is a traditionally sex-segregated jimjilbang spa, where it is normal to be nude in communal areas. The owner filed a suit for the right to exclude trans-identified males, on free speech and freedom of religion grounds, arguing that Olympus would lose revenue if unable to exclude this group. But the court ruled in favour of Wilvich, who has intact male genitalia, triggering a heated protest and counter-protest.

And even in ultra-progressive California, minorities have broken out to protest the new order. Armenian parents in LA protested a Pride-themed assembly reading about same-sex parents. Elsewhere in Los Angeles, a running culture-war battle over the decision to “honour” the Christian-parody drag performers Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at an LA Dodgers game prompted mass protests and a boycott by the 50% Latino (and hence often Catholic) Dodgers fanbase.

The phrase “progressive stack”, in circulation since the days of Occupy Wall Street, refers to a notional hierarchy of “marginalisation” based on fixed identity characteristics. It’s a framework that has, in the years since Occupy, increasingly spread from radical politics toward the mainstream. What happens, then, when stakeholders in the “progressive stack” quarrel among themselves about their position in the pile?

Optimists imagine that the revelation that a purportedly monolithic group of “marginalised” voices in fact conceals many ideological inconsistencies will cause the whole edifice to come tumbling down. I am less sure; I think it more likely that such contests will simply make it clearer who takes precedence in the hierarchy.

By what right do liberals feel betrayal when Muslims prefer to be muslim? Perhaps liberals need to wind their necks in.

Seems like those Muslims didn’t realise they were being the recipients of tolerance and grace. They weren’t I would guess, expected to do anything in accordance with their well known World View. It’s a bit like here in UK when the Labour party over several generations now to a greater or lesser extent promotes ethnic people over indigenous white in the delusion that this widens their support base and not yet even quite cottoning on that those people want prosperity (or they’d have stayed at home) and once they get some they vote Tory.

BTW…the council did not ban the flag in the city. It banned the flying of the flag on city buildings or in city property. They clearly said that private homes and businesses were of course free to fly it.
In fact, they did not exclude only the Pride Flag, they said that the only flags that can be flown are the US Flag, the State Flag and the City Flag. In short….only government related flags may be flown on city property.

It’s the overwhelming sense of righteous saviourism that ‘liberals’ have due to their ginormous reserves of smugness and arrogance. They think of everyone else as pets for their self-imagined benevolence. When the pets don’t behave as expected it offends their fragile narcissistic egos.

There have always been many gay men who had sexual relations with women, mainly because they wanted to participate fully in family and communal life. Now, that’s no longer necessary and therefore less common. But gay men–we do exist–find ultimate satisfaction with other men.

I think it more likely that such contests will simply make it clearer who takes precedence in the hierarchy.
This is an important point to make. Progressive ideology is aggressively secular and hostile to religion. Until now, virtually all of this hostility has been directed against Christianity. However, with Islam now apparently in conflict with LGBT dogma, we can expect the progressives to turn against Islam. How this develops will be an interesting spectacle.

Translating this blowback to the UK context, this is why I’m very skeptical that the Red Wall will actually go back to Labour come the day. I suspect many especially older voters, are gonna be like, “Yeah… thanks but no thanks” especially if the Tories have enough nous to simply mention wokery issues to tee the debate up in the run up to polling day. They don’t even need to take an explicit position – just light the blue touchpaper and then stand well back, as they watch Labourites of various hues walk into the debate and self-immolate by expressing a rainbow of self-incriminating opinions.

There are two ways of looking at what is going on in Hamtramck.
The first possibility is that the local government has banned the flying of all flags on municipal buildings in a bad-faith move aimed implicitly at the Pride flag.
But another possibility is this: that the local government – made up of first-generation immigrants to the USA – understands that the best way to integrate newcomers to the country is to keep sectarian and confessional affiliations out of politics.
Some of my family’s ancestors who received US citizenship had to do that, when they were required to “renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty whatever”. The crafters of this oath understood that in building a new nation, there could be allegiance to only one flag.

I suggest that readers follow the link to “progressive stack”. You couldn’t make it up. And you have been warned, as it is bound to cross the pond, if it isn’t here already.
But no need to worry, since apparently and not surprisingly, how you ‘identify’ is what counts, so if you are that pathetic creature, a white cis-gendered straight male, all you have to have to do is self-identify as a transgender POC lesbian, and you will rise to the top of the stack. You will then be prioritized for “in-class contributions that [allow] marginalized students to speak before non-marginalized students.”

I saw that too – absolutely appalling. Especially the reference to the ‘white male problem’. I have run out of patience with these creeps.
The problem is they’re not trying to be more ‘inclusive’ – they’re excluding whites and whites only.
Here in the UK, the exam boards recently removed Seamus Heaney and Philip Larkin from the syllabus and replaced them with 20 new ‘poets’ and guess what? In a country that is 82% white there was not a single white male.
I wouldn’t mind so much if they were better writers but nearly all of it is meretricious crap.

The only positive to massive uncontrolled immigration from the Third World is that most of the incomers are strongly religious and likely to push back strongly against this insanity the moment it begins encroaching on their enclaves. I think our profound skepticism of the trans movement can easily cloud judgement about what constitutes appropriate and inappropriate protest. I fully support the Muslim town council in Michigan that won’t fly pride flags. We need much, much more of this.

Yet I think it’s creepy when Muslim parents encourage children to stomp on a pride flag. It dehumanizes the group you oppose. IMO it teaches children that the people represented by the flag are less than human. I may profoundly disagree with the trans movement, but they are still human beings

While I am inclined to sympathise with your view it should not be forgotten that the flag is a battle emblem. Countries have flags but it is only very recently that sexual preferences have acquired a flag as part of their ideological battle to be planted on conquered territory, so it is understandable that those that oppose the ideology wish to see the flag of conquest trampled.

If public buildings wanted to be inclusive they would fly the heterosexual flag as well. You might ask what that is. As far as I know there is none as heterosexuals do not have a specific ideology they wish to impose nowadays – although up until Wolfenden the law did make male homosexuality illegal in England but there was no specific flag for the straight to wave. Personally I have no desire to march behind a Straight flag or to see it flown but neither do I wish to see LGBTQAI+ flags flown. Your sexual preference is a private matter not something to be celebrated with aggressive flag waving.

The time is overdue for conservatives and traditionalists to take back the institutions through which the woke, intolerant, anti-liberal Marxist Left has had its long march. If that also means taking back the streets through public displays of sentiment, so be it. This is not the time to capitulate to insanity, but to regain the sober-minded virtues on which Western society was built and which has and will sustain it if the libertine, nihilistic impulses of a tiny majority are successfully resisted. If the majority merely shrug their shoulders, the battle is lost.

It remains to be seen if the leaders of Christian, conservative Jewish, and Muslim faiths will actively engage. So far, they have been largely AWOL.

“All that remains for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” – Sir Edmund Burke

Islam has a rich history of meeting progressive thought. It’s not yet another member of the Progressive stack, and it has more depth here than either the Left or Right in the West give credit for.

A little Nietzsche, anyone?
At one stroke the bond and constraint of the old discipline are torn…..Variation, whether as deviation ( to something higher, subtler, rarer ) or as degeneration or monstrosity, suddenly appears on the scene in the greatest abundance and magnificence: the individual dares to be individual and different….
At these turning points in history we behold beside one another, and often mutually involved and entangled, a splendid, manifold, junglelike growth and upward striving, a kind of tropical tempo in the competition to grow, and a tremendous ruin and self-ruination, as the savage egoisms that have turned, almost exploded, against one another wrestle for ‘sun and light’ and can no longer derive any limit, restraint, or consideration from their previous morality…..
…..the individual appears, obliged to give himself laws and to develop his own arts and wiles for self-preservation, self-enhancement, self-redemption….
All sorts of new what-fors and wherewithals, no shared formulations any longer; misunderstanding allied with disrespect; decay, corruption and the highest desires gruesomely entangled……”
Well, there’s a lot more where that came from.
Sounds like an old fire and brimstoner, don’t he? An irony he found it difficult to conceal.

I see this whole thing fracturing.

Blacks & White Progressives v. Everyone else on Merit in Education

Gays and Lesbians v. Trans Activists

Socially Conservative Immigrants v. Progressive Social Policy

Most Parents v. Govt Trans Activists + State Intervention on affirmation

Majority of Voters v. Green New Deal policies

Shareholders v. ESG Investing

Most of the US Population v. Woke Ideology.

Kids who started transitioning v. The doctors who did it

I predicted there would be a wave of lawsuits by older teens and young adults against the medical people who gave them hormones and cut off their private parts and it is starting to happen. One or two big settlements or judgements and those doctors and their insurance companies are gonna be bailing out on that practice.

The worm is turning. You can feel it.

You can see it in the rage. You can see it in the vicious way that the trans activists attack those who de-transition.

There is a major backlash coming. Its brewing. It shows up in polling. It is showing up in boycotts. It is showing up in the disagreements between the various “marginalized” groups. You see that “trans” is becoming less cool and more “sad” or “weird” on social media.

Blacks are clearly at the top as this article from Cornell illustrates:

Many lesbians and gay men who recognize the misogyny and homophobia that drive gender ideology are also speaking out. It’s maddening to have our acronym and movement hijacked by this madness; more of us are saying so, creating fissures in the strategically fabricated notion of an “LGBTQ+ community” that was never real in the first place.
