“You can kill your puppy on the altar of Islam and inclusivity.” So begins House Representative Nancy Mace in her latest YouTube video, titled: “Nancy Mace Called a BIGOT for Exposing Animal Sacrifices.” It’s a punchy headline, but it’s in keeping with the others on her channel: “THE ENEMY WITHIN: Nancy Mace EXPOSES the EPIDEMIC of the White Liberal Woman”, “Nancy Mace BLASTS CNN on the Radical Islam Takeover”, and “THE END OF AMERICA: Nancy Mace EXPOSES the Radical Socialists Leading Michigan Democrats.”
Less than three months after her defeat in the South Carolina gubernatorial primary, Nancy Mace is rebranding as a YouTuber. This month, she unveiled Get Maced, a nightly show that, if her existing output is anything to go by, will focus primarily on Islam and the radical Left. Eight out of her last 13 shows have centred on this twin threat, a threat apparently so grave that it calls for AI-generated videos of slaughtered animals and several clips of Hasan Piker. Crucially, there is a strong emphasis on America’s impending collapse, which requires almost no evidence, just a warning that can be repeated over and over.
Mace joins the likes of Ted Cruz, Adam Schiff and Gavin Newsom, all of whom have seen their channels grow to hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Each one has a strong whiff of “how do you do, fellow kids?”, with nearly all their videos featuring the classic combination of shouty headlines, big bold colours, superlative language, and an animated face on the thumbnail image (of which Ben Shapiro is the undisputed master).
MAGA influencers in particular have embraced this formula, often reframing relatively small or trivial stories into something much bigger. For example, in Mace’s animal sacrifice video, she never makes clear who actually called her a bigot, or what animal sacrifices she is “exposing”. Her main piece of evidence is Hamtramck City Council’s vote to allow animal sacrifice for religious purposes, which was reported on three years ago. Concerning, but not quite as dramatic as the headline might suggest.
Compare this with the social media outreach of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Zohran Mamdani. Irrespective of their politics, both are digitally savvy, blending a confessional, personality-driven style with subtle political messaging. AOC’s decision to document her egg-freezing journey was applauded by women on both sides of the aisle, while Mamdani has won begrudging recognition for the relentless pace of his social media operations. Both have acquired millions of followers, which they have cultivated by building sophisticated, multi-platform operations around their political brands.
There is every chance that Get Maced could prove to be a success. Cringe as it may be, the show is already getting tens of thousands of views and its subscriber count is growing steadily. But as fellow YouTuber Tim Pool recently discovered, there are only so many times you can catastrophise about the demise of America before someone realises. With the MAGA media machine already fracturing, Mace may have joined the party a little too late.
