On se demande ce qui se passe lors des soirées à la maison de l’Université de New York. Accueillant les écoles d’arts edgelord Tisch et Steinhardt, NYU est devenue un piège à mouches pour les types alternatifs non déodorés, arrivant de communes loft avec des déjeuners à base de pois chiches pour discuter d’une érotique du pescétarianisme, ou autre chose. En plus d’avoir certains des étudiants les plus riches du pays — Bushwick n’est pas bon marché, bébé — NYU a également certains des plus sérieux, accueillant l’un des camps pro-Palestine les plus hardcore cet été.
Cette année, cependant, NYU a un nouvel atout : Barron Trump. Le descendant de 6’7” a commencé son cursus à la Stern School of Business en septembre, après avoir obtenu son diplôme de l’improbablement nommé Oxbridge Academy en Floride. Tout espoir d’être mystérieusement chic sera à jamais contrecarré par le fait que tout le monde sait que Barron est conduit à l’université chaque matin par des gardes du corps de Trump Tower, et par le fait qu’il est, d’après un peu de surveillance sur les réseaux sociaux, hanté par son amitié d’enfance avec le gars le plus nul du monde.
Bo Loudon, contrairement à Barron, est prolifique sur les réseaux sociaux, où sa bio Instagram avertit «Dieu d’abord». Il est le genre d’adolescent de petite taille, en pantalon serré, avec une frange en swoop dont l’Instagram se compose de photos avec un pouce levé avec des personnes plus grandes et plus célèbres — souvent, Donald lui-même. On se demande comment le MAGAmind Bo, qui se présente comme «le jeune pistolet de Trump», se débrouille parmi les conquêtes de Barron en études queer (ce sont toujours les filles les plus en forme de n’importe quelle université), frôlant à peine son coude alors que le prince du populisme engage une conversation sur les jorts («ouais, j’aime vraiment Mitski aussi…»). Contrairement à presque tous les étudiants avant lui, Barron n’a pas le luxe de passer l’été entre l’école et l’université à se réinventer agressivement. Il ne peut même pas simuler un passé romantique — quelque chose que même les meilleurs d’entre nous ont dû faire pendant la semaine d’accueil. Au milieu des spéculations selon lesquelles il aurait verrouillé le modèle de 20 ans Klara Jones, son père a déclaré dans un podcast que, à sa connaissance, Barron n’avait jamais eu de petite amie. Aïe.
On comprend que Barron ait déclaré qu’il est maintenant “une proie facile” pour l’intrusion des médias. Après tout, il a de l’expérience. Contrairement à la première mandature de son père, lorsqu’il était un petit garçon maladroit de 10 ans, Barron a maintenant 18 ans, il est massif et, pour un certain type de jeune homme aux boutons d’acné, avide de Prime, il est cool. Et les enfants de politiciens sont les influenceurs les plus en vogue du moment : dans une vidéo virale de la nuit électorale, le sénateur texan Ted Cruz s’est adressé à une foule à Houston. « Je crois, et j’espère et je prie, que Donald Trump sera élu président des États-Unis », a-t-il déclaré. Sa fille de 16 ans, Caroline, se tenant derrière le reste de la famille dans une robe mini rouge brillante, a affiché l’expression faciale universelle pour « ouch », se tournant vers sa mère Heidi qui applaudissait et disant : « Ne l’applaudissez pas ! »
Donc, Barron est en bonne compagnie, mais il est impossible de savoir ce qui l’attend. Vous pouvez déjà acheter des produits dérivés « Barron Trump Président 2044 » sur eBay, et il y a des spéculations selon lesquelles son père pourrait le retirer de l’université pour l’aider à gérer les affaires à Washington — mais les destins des premiers enfants américains passés pourraient donner un indice plus important sur son avenir.
La première fille à subir les foudres de la Maison Blanche était sans aucun doute Chelsea Clinton. Elle n’avait pas encore 13 ans lorsque son père Bill a été élu en 1993, à l’aube de la télévision de masse à la MTV et TMZ, sans le respect dû aux politiciens. Plus célèbre encore, le commentateur conservateur Rush Limbaugh a dit à son public télévisé : « Socks est le chat de la Maison Blanche. Mais saviez-vous qu’il y a aussi un chien à la Maison Blanche ? » Il a montré une photo de l’enfant de 12 ans. Une autre fois, lors de l’un des sketchs bien-aimés de Mike Myers, Wayne’s World, Wayne et Garth ont classé les dix choses qu’ils aimaient chez Bill Clinton. À la troisième place, les filles « babe-a-licious » du vice-président Al Gore. « Schwing ! Enfin, il y a du talent à la Maison Blanche ! » Kristin, la fille cadette de Gore, avait 15 ans. La deuxième sur la liste, « Chelsea », est éditée hors du clip officiel YouTube. Lors de l’émission en direct, ils ont déclaré que Chelsea, préadolescente, était « une babe en développement ». Myers s’est ensuite excusé pour la blague.
Plus récemment, Chelsea s’est exprimée sur l’examen de Barron Trump : « Comme, c’est un enfant. Ne sexualisez pas cet enfant », a-t-elle déclaré en 2020. Pourtant, sans aucun doute, les premières filles ont une situation pire. Lors de la cérémonie très kitsch de « pardon de dinde » présidentielle en 2014, Sasha et Malia Obama ont inévitablement échangé quelques regards gênés. Je défie n’importe quel adolescent de ne pas être mortifié en voyant leur père poser une main sur un oiseau perplexe appelé « Cheese », déclarant solennellement qu’il le sauvera du dîner de Noël. Comme il se trouve, l’ennui adolescent des filles Obama a provoqué la colère d’une assistante républicaine nommée Elizabeth Lauten, qui a écrit un post sur Facebook s’indignant qu’elles devraient « essayer de montrer un peu de classe » ; « habillez-vous comme si vous méritiez du respect, pas une place au bar. Et certainement, ne faites pas de grimaces lors des événements publics télévisés », s’est-elle enflammée. Cette réprimande a suscité une conversation internationale sur le comportement des premiers enfants — et une conversation qui, heureusement, a penché du côté des filles (Lauten, sans surprise, a démissionné peu après).
Il n’y avait rien de nouveau à propos de Turkeygate. Le successeur de Carter, Ronald Reagan, a été piqué par les révélations selon lesquelles son fils Ron avait abandonné Yale pour devenir danseur de ballet, suscitant l’ire des observateurs conservateurs et probablement provoquant des blagues peu charitables sur « le garçon de Nancy ». « Je ne pense pas être du tout flamboyant », a dû dire Ron, tandis que sa mère a remarqué : « Le fait que mon fils soit dans le ballet n’est pas une déclaration politique, ni cela ne dit quoi que ce soit sur sa masculinité. »
Mais les plus grands terreurs de l’adolescence à la Maison Blanche doivent être les jumelles Bush, Barbara et Jenna. Âgées de dix-neuf ans au moment de l’inauguration de leur père, elles étaient à la fois harcelées et admirées pour leurs frasques apparemment ivres. Le petit ami de Jenna a été raccompagné chez lui par des agents des services secrets après avoir été arrêté pour ivresse publique ; il y avait des histoires de consommation de marijuana, de fausses cartes d’identité et de folies de printemps au Mexique. En 2001, elles ont été interpellées pour avoir essayé de commander des boissons dans un restaurant à Austin, quelques semaines après que Jenna ait été arrêtée pour « avoir tenu une bouteille de bière » dans une boîte de nuit. Inutile de dire que cela nous en dit beaucoup plus sur le puritanisme bizarre des lois américaines sur l’alcool que sur la déviance des jumelles. « Elle est apparue au tribunal dans une chemise noire décolletée, un pantalon Capri rose et une bague de pied », s’est enthousiasmée The Guardian’s Katie Roiphe dans sa couverture bizarre, typique du genre. Ce même journaliste décrit les jumelles Bush comme « des filles de fête du sud dégageant une sorte de sexualité paresseuse et ronde, évoquant des nuits chaudes et de grosses voitures, mâchant du chewing-gum et sirotant des margaritas ». Ailleurs, elle a décrit le moment où Jenna « a failli tomber de sa robe sans bretelles » lors d’un événement à la Maison Blanche. La frénésie autour de la sensualité et de l’hédonisme des jumelles Bush fait partie d’un passe-temps national — s’extasier sur le culte de la pom-pom girl, de la reine du bal, l’élément rebelle et corruptible d’une famille à l’américaine.
Cela, plus que tout, explique le caractère de notre fascination pour les enfants de la Maison Blanche. C’est une fantaisie de profanation ; un délicieux sentiment de risque, de protocole s’effondrant face à la volonté indisciplinée des adolescents. Pour les filles, il y a toujours un élément de sexualisation supplémentaire — la politesse et le conservatisme de la première famille sont un décor tentant pour des regards prédateurs (« toutes grandes ! »). Les adolescents ont une incapacité unique à cacher leurs émotions — ils sont conscients mais sans ruse, ils trahissent le ridicule au cœur du spectacle politique. Ils sont vus comme des fauteurs de troubles parce qu’ils ne sont pas apprivoisés par la convention, et n’ont pas encore appris à se frotter. Leur extrême sensibilité à l’ironie était autrefois un piège pour les relations publiques — maintenant, cela est devenu un atout.
Barron Trump poussant son père dans le monde des edgelords d’internet est un signe des temps, en ce sens que les processus politiques traditionnels se sont effondrés ; jamais auparavant un candidat à la présidence n’aurait utilisé sa progéniture adolescente pour autre chose que des votes de bienveillance — encore moins pour des conseils. L’informalité, dire l’indicible, fait maintenant partie de la marque. Les chemises rigides sont hors mode ; être « basé » est à la mode. Le prochain leader du monde libre s’est commercialisé comme un adolescent fossilisé, encouragé par son admirateur de l’école intermédiaire (Musk) et guidé par un véritable adolescent vers les enfants les plus audacieux dans les gradins.
Ce que l’avenir réserve à Barron reste un mystère pour l’instant — mais ce que je ne donnerais pas pour être à l’une de ces fêtes de NYU lorsque des murmures parcourent les dortoirs : « Vous ne croirez pas qui est là ! » Comme les cours royales d’autrefois, les pièces doivent vaciller à un aperçu du baron.

“Rigged” is the overriding theme of the 2020 election in the US.
And the sheer intensity of the hypocrisy is blinding to the thinking person. To portray a gaggle of mostly overweight, unarmed, balding light beer drinkers as an “insurrection” does a huge injustice to the English language.

The rioters showed a touching faith in the US constitution. As if they might have disturbed the ratification and that would have halted the accession to the presidency of J. Biden (an illegitimate president in their eyes and in the opinion of many outside observers).
They could have killed half the members of Congress and the smooth continuation of power would have been undisturbed. Where was their support in the military? Or in the judiciary? Or their toehold in the hydra-headed agencies of bureaucratic control?
Those who insist this was close to a coup and that democracy was in danger that day are simply cynical liars. Democracy is indeed in danger and perhaps mortally poisoned. But the killers are those who pretend that power is not already in their hands and that the ‘coup’ was against the people and constitution of the USA.

It’s not what happened at the Capitol on Jan. 6 that concerns me. It was the behind the scenes planning to keep Pence from recording the electoral votes from the states, votes that had been previously certified by all the states. The election was over and Pence’s role was a formality. Peter Navarro discussed this plan to a reporter, a plan that would not accept the electoral votes from some of the states, and the end result would be that Trump would win the election. If all this is true, then yes, I think our democracy was in danger.
Of course, and the greatest danger is the decay in US civics such that a great number of Trump supporters have turned away from democracy, enlightenment values, and who closely resemble captured cult members, just as surely as the most fervent, over-reaching social warriors do.

I think it is more like a funeral dirge.
I had to laugh at the drama with which the clips of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were surrounded. What was said was so innocuous and anodyne.
Yet the New York Times said gasps were audible when Jared Kushner said the White House counsel was whining. Really?
Donald Trump can be a boorish bloviator. Many don’t care for his style. Same with boorish Boris Johnson in the UK and his stupid parties.
But come on, man. These men are effective politicians who put their competition to shame. Prosecutions like this Committee hearing are so petty.
We live in an era of spin. Crowds invading parliaments in Georgia, Ukraine, Romania etc. are democratic forces but the one in the US is anti democratic.
When the riot happened I certainly did feel astonished and wondered about the future of our democracy. But when nothing happened afterward, i.e. coordinated attacks elsewhere in Wash DC or state capitols etc., one realizes it was indeed a momentary expression of speech, not really an insurrection. So the empty spectacle of these “hearings” only serves purposes related to certain political agendas, and will likely have the added result of further dividing the electorate.
There are known tools that are used to turn a crowd into a mob then onto riot. Bullhorns were a feature used to inspire, ready in place but who were those people? Why did the police throw flash bangs followed rubber bullets into the crowd milling about making noise? Who gave that order and why?

Donald Trump has a big mouth, and offends a lot of people, but as president he was moderate in his actions and surprisingly effective. Here’s some of what he accomplished:
— Energy independence.
— A secure southern border.
— Ending the Afghanistan war.
— A robust economy.
— Reinvigorating NATO.
— Moving our embassy to Jerusalem.
— The Abraham accords.
— USMCA.
— Clipping Iran’s war wings by killing Qasem Soleimani.
— Meeting with Kim Jong Un.
— Crushing ISIS without getting mired in the muddle of Middle Eastern politics.
Donald Trump swept into office and despite unprecedented persecution by Bob Mueller and his minions never stopped working for four years. Joe Biden swept into office and has performed pathetically.

The weird thing about the J6 committee, is the number of legal boundary lines it appears to have breached – so matters like how it was founded, the powers its used to gather evidence, the way its crossed lines on executive privilege and enforced compliance through arrests. Yet, it seems that there has been little legal challenge to how the committee has been behaving from the other side of the aisle. Some challenges by individuals but not so much en bloc.
The Republicans either don’t care, or they’re happy to take the precedents that are being set for when it’s their turn.

Clearly Schumer’s threat in 2020 that two named Supreme Court judges would reap the whirlwind and wouldn’t ‘know what hit them’ made to a crowd outside the Supreme Court building was an attempt to incite an insurrection.
Thank goodness this new Committee is finally going to deal with that manifestly craven and illegal act.

But then again, according to Speaker Pelosi, our Supreme Court justices are safe and don’t need protection. And according to Majority Leader Schumer, should “pay the price” for any decision that doesn’t comport with his side’s worldview.
They can technically call it an ‘armed’ insurrection by including almost anything that can be used as a weapon, like a flagpole.
Cheney’s singular hate for Trump was on display. With such a bias claiming democracy at risk was ludicrous. No new revelations arrived. We have yet to understand why enhanced security was dismissed and police so ill-informed of the risks. Do we know who the inspiring players were that turned the angry crowd into a mob that turned into a riot?
The people with bull horns pointing the way to the Capital building were all associated with the FBI. Some were employees some were independent contractors.

The Democrats are desperate to exclude Trump from the next presidential election. Their constant obsession with him will probably have the reverse effect.
Why has Ray Epps not been arrested? (He is clearly visible and identified in several videos from the day telling people to get inside) Was he a federal agent inciting the riot? Why did the Democrats dodge the questions about him?
Ray Epps has been very effectively memoryholed. And it’s not difficult to see why: high ranking FBI officers admitted in a Senate hearing called by Ted Cruz that they were “aware” of Epps, but dodged all other questions. Named as nr 17 on their Jan 6 ‘most wanted’ list, Epps was silently removed from it after several months, despite damning video evidence of him repeatedly egging people on to “go into the capitol”. It’s quite clear there was some level of organized provocation, implemented by Epps and his team, and that this was a “super covert” operation which was only brought to the attention of wider FBI management when the unwanted video evidence appeared.
The answer to your “whys” is therefore simple: arresting Epps (who undoubtedly has “insurance”) or even admitting he was present & provoking the protesters, would bring the whole Jan 6 “insurrection” narrative crashing down. And perhaps even trigger an investigation in the opposite direction.
My opinion is that this is an effort to stop Trump from standing for president again, rather like the way countries pretending to be democratic ‘disqualify’ the main opponents on some contrived accusation.
Personally, I hope he doesn’t stand, because I think he might be elected, after which our news would again be dominated by anti-Trump stories for another four years.
I always check the background of what appears to be a polemical piece of writing. I suggest others in this thread do the same. Read about the Claremont Institute and its opinion of Trump. You may be surprized.

They are dealing with the prospect of annihilation in other ways. New Mexico has given temporary papers to 7000 illegal immigrants. Look for them come November. Pennsylvania has allowed undated ballots to be counted in a Republican primary even though this was admitted in 2020 as a Covid emergency measure. If Fetterman is trailing in a close finish in November this precedent will be available. In Colorado it appears that a Democrat PAC has been advertising for a MAGA Republican in the primary so as to have an easier go of it come November. George Soros is buying a bunch of radio stations in Florida for an easily guessed reason.

Wow, a lot of kool- aid drinkers here. Lifelong Americaphile here, broken-hearted by the insanity breaking out all over the States (on both sides of the aisle). Although as I get older to it appears to me that this was an accident waiting to happen. Remembering various stunned European adults of my youth in the USA (1970s) noting, with classic old world understatement that, ‘Ameruca is a young country, and generally Americans may not be that sophisticated. There is a place called the centre ground where reasonable people and theories are – go there; and if you don’t then you will be an integral part of the collapse of your country. No joke.
