This week’s Democratic National Convention has felt frequently like a coronation for Kamala Harris, and the UK press is clearly keen to get into the spirit of things. From The News Agents to the national broadcaster, British media coverage from Chicago has been remarkably boosterish about the woman who may well be America’s next president. Yet there has been pushback from some distinguished corners about this cosy reporting.
Personally, I hate the idea of another Trump victory.
BUT the BBC’s obligation to be impartial extends to USA too. Yet too much of the BBC’s US presidential campaign coverage is lazy – just a Harris love-fest. Most of their Democrat voices aren’t being challenged.

One such case this morning was journalist Michael Crick, the former political editor of the BBC’s Newsnight, who claimed on social media that “too much” of the corporation’s “US presidential campaign coverage is lazy — just a Harris love-fest”. He added that “most of their Democratic voices aren’t being challenged.” The writing was probably on the wall when the BBC got involved in Kamala’s “brat summer”…
