It has been the most contested and mysterious event in the Russia-Ukraine war. Who was responsible for sabotaging the Nord Stream pipelines that connected Germany to Russia? The Russians? The CIA? Or Ukraine itself? Bojan Pancevski has had access to the plotters themselves and tells Freddie Sayers an extraordinary story of extra-state actors, deep sea divers, bombs and sailing boats that sounds more like the plot of a movie than real life. Except, according to this prize-winning investigative reporter, it’s all too real…

SubscribeVery interesting. The Wall Street Journal did no favor to this story by the tabloidish flavor they slathered on it, but the story though improbable does seem solid. Not rock solid, but a lot more solid than Seymour Hersh’s flimsy single-source report that the CIA would blow up a half German-owned pipeline.
The idea that today’s CIA is some all powerful nefarious actor always seemed wacky to this American. Nefarious most likely but competent and able to do this without someone finding out and leaking it seemed very dodgy to me
Very entertaining stuff. When it comes to interviewing people, Freddie Sayers is the very best. Bojan Pancevski is a pro and entirely credible. And it’s a great story. If it’s true, and it seemed to me to be the least plausible of the options until now, I wouldn’t call it amateurish, as Freddy did. They did blow up the pipelines, after all ( allegedly ).
