It’s not quite that bad … a tourist sees only a slice of life. The Woolworths down the road from me has everything, and in those suburbs that have a ‘gourmet’ grocer – everything a bit more expensive – you’ll always find what you need. Perhaps it reflects the prosperity of Australians that so many are able to easily buy up weeks of provisions (their holiday homes are now well-stocked). As for the feeling of doom, yes, we enjoy a bit of that in an ironic kind of way – you could read this bit of Australiana:
