Sad to see this beautiful country descending into chaos. A country that depended so much on tourism obviously was destroyed by covid measures and travel restrictions. I’m afraid that in the coming months many other countries msy follow suit.

Where does China fit into this? It looks like China has a long term eye on Sri Lanka as a hub port (China->Myanmar->Sri Lanka and then to Africa or Europe), similar to the way the British used Singapore in the reverse direction. Would China see the instability as an opportunity, or a problem?

That is a very good question, Saul. No doubt it is embarrassing for the Chinese to see such clients in deep trouble. But this has happened before, and the Chinese managed to establish good relations with the opponents of the Rajapaksas.

Perhaps a country so reliant on tourism shouldn’t have blocked tourists?

This has all the hallmarks of foreign intervention. The usual principal suspect is the US State Dept. Anyone have a list of players in this game? US, India & China
