This gave me a flasback to 2000s: Zaman as the ever reliable fan-girl to everything Erdogan did, applauding all things he said, and dismissing his critics as disgruntled “elites”.
The parallels in the West were interesting as well. Trump got elected about 10 years after Erdogan started to show his true colours.
The Economist et.al. who were very critical of Turkey’s elitist limited democracy for excluding certain populist opinions (as spearheaded by Erdogan), were not so surprisingly unreceptive to their own people’s populist asks for democracy in the shape of Trump (and Johnson) shedding their enthusiasm for unconstrained democracy.
