Northumberland did the rest of England an immeasurable service back in 2004 in the North East England Devolution Referendum.
It was overwhelming rejected this divisive Blairite proposal by 77.9% to 22.0%, albeit on an apathetic turnout of 47.7%.
At the time the North East was regarded as
a Blairite stronghold, and the campaign for the Referendum was entrusted to the pugilistic John Prescott.
However just as the men of Northumberland had historically ‘seen off’ countless incursions by the ravenous Scotch, so they saw off Prescott and all his minions.
Vae victis.
