If nothing else, Ghislaine Behind Bars — Ghislaine Maxwell’s exclusive interview for TalkTV, aired last night — gave an interesting insight into the realities of life in a low-security American prison. We learnt, for instance, that inmates are expected to make their beds “military style” and that the meat-free meal options usually feature either beans or tofu, although the latter is so bereft of seasoning that it is almost unpalatable. Not quite The Shawshank Redemption, then, but not much fun for a woman who has probably never before been tasked with making her own bed.
All in all, this was an odd spectacle, with no more than 20 minutes of grainy interview footage spun out into an hour-long special, complete with TV psychologists and legal commentary. Maxwell speaks in an English drawl with occasional Americanisms, rearranges her hair frequently, and refuses to apologise to her victims. Her manner has widely been branded as “narcissistic”, which is hardly surprising in a convicted sex offender.
What’s really interesting about the interview, though, is the process of escalation. Back in October of last year Maxwell gave her first interview from prison, during which she spoke of her “dear friend” Prince Andrew in a way that must have made the Buckingham Palace communications team wince. But last night’s interview was longer and more detailed, offering more meat to the media, rather than just unseasoned tofu.
Among several explosive claims, Maxwell insisted that her boss-lover-accomplice Jeffrey Epstein was murdered, and that the negligent prison authorities were to blame. “I say Epstein has died,” she replied when asked if she had a message for his victims, “and they should take their disappointment and upset out on the authorities who allowed that to happen.”
We can assume from these statements that Maxwell also considers herself to be at risk of murder in prison. Close observers of her case have noted that the surveillance cameras witnesses claim were fitted in bedrooms in Epstein’s many properties could well have been used for the purpose of collecting material to be used for blackmail, suggesting that any number of Epstein’s rich and powerful friends could have had a motivation to see him silenced.
It was widely assumed at the time of her conviction that Maxwell was not going to spill the beans on the other men involved in Epstein’s sex trafficking ring, including the high-profile passengers who flew on the so-called ‘Lolita Express.’ Maxwell’s brother Ian told the Sunday Times at the time that the prosecution had “confirmed no plea bargain offers were made or received” before the trial, and that “I expect that position to be maintained.”
But 20 years of incarceration is a long time. In the seven months since her conviction Maxwell has now blabbed to the media twice, with increasing candour. We know that she resents her public portrayal as “the cruellest, meanest, most poisonous person” and we know that she is “depressed” in prison. She is determined to appeal her conviction, and we learnt from Ghislaine Behind Bars that she gets through her days by focusing on the hope of release.

Me too. I don’t know what Prince Andrew is guilty of. The woman who was after the money never accused him of forcing her, and she was seventeen.
Prince Andrew was sued civilly by Virginia Giuffre for sexual assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress. She reportedly got at least $13 million in settlement.
I thought the accusation was that she had been well paid by Epstein to seduce Prince Andrew (she has been accused of grooming younger girls for Epstein) and the interpretation of the liaison as assault was because she was underage but she was 17 at the time.
Oh poor Prince Andrew, being ‘seduced’ by an underage girl. He is a privileged idiot and his sense of entitlement led him to believe statutory rape was ok because he’s a Prince. He’s an embarrassment not only to the monarchy but to the whole of the UK.

There is simply no way that the man Prince Andrew was at 40 years old, recently divorced and one of the most eligible single men on the planet at the time, would have knowingly had sex with Virginia Roberts under such circumstances. He may come across as an entitled oaf, but he is not actually a moron.
The payoff happened simply because Giuffre was in a position to make enough further unprovable accusations to risk the Duke of York being formally charged with crimes in the USA – an intolerable prospect for the Royal Family – so he had to pay up. It was legalised extortion, nothing more.

The idea that Jeffrey Epstein held orgies at his private island seems to be fantasy. His “black book” of contacts has been published and is just a list of celebrities he met and cultivated over the years, plus his family members. It certainly is not a list of men who he trafficked women to.
The idea that lots of famous men flew on the “Lolita Express” to Jeffrey Epstein’s private island to have sex with girls there seems also fantasy. The pilot’s logs were published and he testified in the case against Ghislaine Maxwell. He said that he knew of no such trips. No other evidence has been found.
This is a salacious story, and we don’t know all the facts. But Virginia Giuffre is a proven liar on some facts and no one else has come forward naming names. I would be very surprised if there were any other men who abused the young women Jeffrey Epstein favored. He seems to have kept them for himself.

Simple. We are intrigued by the soap opera called the Royal Family. Who would care if Alan Derechowitz behaved badly? Who even had heard of him? And there is something prurient about the sex life of the prince who many people found attractive (in his heyday, when this was all supposed to have happened).

It is entirely apparent that Jeffery Epstein was a serial abuser of underage girls over many many years, in that legally and ethically, they were too young to consent under any circumstances. Ghislaine Maxwell also knew exactly what he was doing, colluded in the procurement of these girls, and that he was going to engage in sexual activity with them. She has never tried to claim that he in any way coerced her into into it, as a defence, or that she was mentally incapacitated herself and thus in some way not responsible.
So she is guilty, of the crimes for which she was convicted, and seems unrepentant.
All the rest is just salacious gossip, schadenfreude and wishful thinking, but it will keep some people, including highly paid lawyers, busy for quite some time.
And Prince Andrew ain’t going to end up behind bars – his punishment, of public disgrace and the ending of his career as overprivileged sponger and member of the inner international clique of the very rich, and partial exclusion from the Royal Family has already been meted out.

The Behaviour Panel’s analysis of the interview suggests that GM showed fear when talking about Clinton. If she thinks Epstein was murdered, then she knows that she could be next. She is probably keen to stay in the public eye, so that her ‘suicide’ would be widely reported.
Just to add … GM was quite positive and emphasised she was motivated by her legal work in prison. Presumably to prevent any stories about her being depressed and unable to cope with life in prison leading to her ‘taking her own life’.

Very good analysis on Redacted a few days ago which highlighted the flaws in the suicide verdict. They come to the conclusion that in all probablity Epstein was murdered. They also predicted that Ghislaine has deposited a flash drive with her solicitors which fully documents all the visitors to the island (to be released on her death)

However the relevant point is that a great many Americans who broke their own laws are walking around free while a UK heiress and a UK Royal are taking all the blame so far. That is a disgrace that ought not to be tolerated.
