China are long term experts in being patient. The ‘we are only a poor developing country’ is a way to divert attention away whilst they achieve their long term goals. Not a popular thing to remind people of this but it was Trump in his 2015 manifesto who called China out specifically. He was immediately derided but now it is the de facto position for the West. It is the UK and many others in the West that are the developing nations now (if you look at things from simply an economic perspective) except that our ego does not allow us to recognise it, so we just focus on getting our pronouns correct. The gradually louder drum banging in ‘Jaws’ springs to mind in any China discussion.

It will be interesting to see if they can resolve their way out of their aging population issue.

The China miracle is based on the huge trade imbalance of the last 25 years. Once the West significantly reduces this imbalance by decoupling, the inefficiencies of the Communist structure will prevail. The plan for Xi is to increase internal consumption to replace the trade imbalance before the West can decouple.
If the West decouples…. And I sincerely hope it does.
Who thought having closing down factories, shift the technology to China and have them manufacture everything was a good idea?

Yeah, they’re f##ked! Stagflation is setting in. They are losing their competitive edge for manufacturing wages. Corporations are “de-risking”. Their neighbours are arming up, the power centres around the entire world are conspiring against them. Biden’s chips act is going to cripple them. The housing market is a shambles. The local governments are bordering on bankrupt.
All this with a population that for two generations has come to expect rising economic standards.
We have already hit peak China and the likelihood that they will lash out militarily is increased because of that. A scary time.

China is rushing headlong into a population crisis despite the policy changes of the last few years. Unless they are gonna go all “Handmaiden’s Tale” I think they are going to find themselves in an increasingly desperate situation. One thing to do forced abortions, whole different thing to try and do forced pregnancies. THOUGH….would I put it past them?
They have made all their progress on huge trade surpluses, coercing IP out of foreign companies, economic espionage and huge amounts of debt. They never managed to convert that into anything self sustaining.
They only got away with what they have because the rest of the world was asleep. That is not true anymore.
