I have long wondered how the “value” of (say) a painting can suddenly go massively up just because of the name of the artist. Bit like the value of bitcoins I suppose. No reason other than gambling.

Funnily enough I sat in on a couple of discussions regarding the curating etc of digital art at Unseen in Amsterdam a couple of years ago. The Digital Curator of the Tate, or some such, was involved, so it was quite high level.
As someone whose interest in art ceases around the time the Celts stopped carving spirals on standing stones I found it all somewhat bewildering, but very interesting.

When my taxes are used to buy rubbish (like “Merde de l’Artiste”) it concerns me, but if private individuals want to buy this stuff then good luck to them. I just find it amusing that so many tough, shrewd businesspeople. those who have amassed great wealth, get taken for patsys but the Gallery sharks.
