The Taleban said whatever it needed to in Doha to get the Americans to leave. The Americans believed it because they had lost the will to carry on. No point pretending otherwise.

“more open” is rather a loaded phrase in the context of the taliban, it’s like saying a more considerate arsonist, or kinder rapist.
