An NBC documentary on “queerness” in nature is slated to air this June in honour of Pride Month, challenging the belief that heterosexuality is the norm in nature.

“Gay penguins, bisexual lions [and] sex-changing clownfish,” as highlighted in the documentary Queer Planet, all have a role to play in the animal kingdom. Yet so powerful is anti-LGBT stigma that even birds and fish have been keeping their alternative lifestyles quiet — until now.

The thrust of the project is that, in nature, sex is far from binary and sexuality is about more than reproduction, thus gay and transgender identities should be destigmatised. Perhaps comparing these populations to wild animals is not the best way to get the point across.
