Crime is still falling in American cities, with a new report from Axios finding a 6% decline in violent crime in the first six months of 2024 compared to the same period last year.
Democrats are already taking a victory lap, per Axios, but the data suggests a slow return to normalcy after a historic surge in crime as American cities scaled back policing in 2020.
The outlet doesn’t compare 2024 to 2019, owing to NYC declining to turn over their more recent data to the Major Cities Chiefs Association. But the organisation reported a surge in homicide (25%) and aggravated assault (11.6) from 2019 to 2020, while other data sets show that violent crime spiked 5.5% from 2019 to 2020. So the drift back to normalcy is not exactly a slam dunk. Can Democrats rebrand as the law and order party?
