The attempted assassination of Donald Trump appears to have won the former president a surprising ally: John Hinckley Jr.

The would-be assassin, who shot Ronald Reagan more than 40 years ago, has called for a lowering of the temperature and for the nation to turn away from violence. “Violence is not the way to go,” he wrote. “Give peace a chance.”

The post was immediately swamped with comments alternately praising him for shooting Reagan in ‘81, expressing regret that he hadn’t killed him, and begging him to try his hand at a Trump assassination. Fortunately for Trump, Hinckley, who is presently focusing on his music career, is a changed man now. Maybe he can play the inauguration.
