I’m prepared to accept a contractual obligation to make at least 11 tackles for PSG next season and I’ll only want half Mbappe’s salary. Yes, obviously I’m selling myself short but I’m doing it for the game.

This is to be welcomed!

When I lived in Arabia well more than fifty years the only ‘sport’ available was public beheading.
This took place on Fridays in ‘Chopper Square’ (as we Europeans called it) Riyadh. The executioner used travel up on Thursdays from the small town of Al Hufuf, about 185 miles to the east.

Today I gather they execute far, far more than in my day, but also with far less professional skill, sadly. So perhaps it really is time for football.

Was there no camel racing? Your comment reminds me of a comment made by a member of the Taliban in a BBC documentary I watched many, many years ago. When asked why the football pitch which had been funded by a charity was not used for football, the man replied the goalposts were used for hangings but if the international community would fund another football ground he was sure it would be used for football.

Yes there was a bit of Camel racing and also some Dog fighting.
However beheadings and the chopping off of other bits, was a fairly regular occurrence, even occasionally enlivened by the odd stoning*. All very biblical.

That’s what I like about you Charles – your realism.

“The Neymar fee more than doubled the previous world transfer record — by far the biggest proportional jump in history.”
Purely nerdy point here but wasn’t Trevor Francis transfer fee double that which Liverpool paid for Kenny Dalgleish?

Dalglish.
And it was 2 years later.

I’m struggling to understand how buying your way into niche industries like Airlines and elite sports like LIV Golf and Football in any way diversifies your economy.

The idea of Mbappe playing for 1 season only in Saudi reminds me of the Klinsmann season at Spurs. Klinsmann wanted to leave Monaco but Bayern weren’t ready to buy him for another year. He went to Spurs with Alan Sugar claiming that he had been signed for 2 seasons. Klinsmann however was free to leave after one season, which he did.
Spoiler alert: Spurs won nothing the season Klinsmann player for them. But I suppose everyone guessed that.

A serious subject and I’m not sure trivialising it is appropriate. I was briefly in Riyadh in the 80s and several of the people I met there were true soccer fanatics and supporters of their local clubs.

Al-Ittihad have a reasonable support. The others would shame a Championship side. See link below:
