Great article. The email by Lisa Bloom captures the severity of the situation, how society has problems, and how we’re moving forward to make things better.
Two cases in my industry show the other end of the spectrum. In one case, a production manager greets everyone in the morning by shaking their hand. The case was certified, and Plaintiff lost.
In a second case, a woman felt uncomfortable when her boss stood with his hands in his pockets. Plaintiff lost.
However, Plaintiffs appealed to the Washington Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of the Plaintiffs.
The Supreme Court wrote that standing with your hands in your pockets is a posture of male dominance and, therefore, harassment. Furthermore, if a woman feels harassed by a public handshake, then it is harassment.
Such extremes undermine the cause of protecting against severe abuse by destroying the justice system’s credibility.
Like the recent article on Seattle’s Policing, Washington policymakers are harming the fabric of the business community through a pretension of virtue taken too far.
I’m so surrounded by these extreme cases it’s easy to become cynical. It helps to read of the good the movement is achieving; it restores faith that it can be a net positive to women and society.
