I’ve met Dawkins a few times, thanks to his groundbreaking science books and his tireless challenging of religious dogma. But on this I think he is dead wrong. I’m disappointed in him, because as a scientist he should be interested in the ‘why’ but also because his reaction seems almost entirely emotional and unscientific. I’ve disagreed with him on other things too, he attempted to defend Chris Tarrant’s treatment of his wife that felt more like justification of his own behaviour than any reasoned conclusion borne of his expertise in evolutionary biology. Perhaps he is another example of saying experts may be experts, but they’re also still human, biased and their conclusions are not always trustworthy
