San Francisco, for decades known around the world for its jazz, free love and beat poetry, has in recent years become notorious for a different reason. Tent encampments on its streets and open-air drug markets have become a reference point for the consequences of ultra-progressive policies.
Their report dives into the ideological and practical battles at the heart of the story, and asks whether San Francisco today could be a harbinger of things to come across the Western world.

SubscribeExcellent documentary! At the beginning of this century I lived in the “tendernob” just above tenderloin and before nob hill. Prior to that I lived in NYC. Immediately upon moving to SF I saw crucial differences in housing between the two cities. NYC rents are high; but, SF rents were astronomically high. There are pockets of affordable apartments in NYC that are halfway OK places to live. That just didn’t exist in SF. I’m back in the NYC area now and homelessness is the worst I’ve ever seen here. However, unlike SF, NYPD does make arrests, social workers are out in the streets for outreach, people who are severely mentally ill are admitted to hospitals. If what the SF city supervisor in this documentary says is true; then, why isn’t he and other “liberal progressives” working to oust the corruption that diverts funds from programs to get homeless people off the streets of SF and into permanent housing? My guess is he, like all people of wealth, don’t want to leave their comfort zones and risk being uncomfortable.
