The best indicator of violent crime, given the problems with reporting and survey sample size needed properly to capture crime, is the homicide rate. This appears to be down.
The biggest driver of violent crime trends is change in the age-demography. When areas have a relatively high proportion of men age 20-40, they will tend to have a higher rate of violent crime.
