Public schools in San Francisco sent their students home for 18 months during the pandemic, the longest school closure in the country. While children were falling behind, the city’s elected school board was tasked with handling the re-opening. But, it seemed, they were too busy trying to pander to progressive demands to get children back in the classroom. These initiatives included renaming schools with ‘problematic’ founders and reducing the numbers of Asian students at elite selective schools.
A group of parents, angry with the extended shutdown and dithering meetings, launched a campaign to recall three members of the school board. Last week, they won with a massive majority. This marks the first successful recall in the city in over 100 years.
I sat down with three parent activists, Autumn, Siva and Ann, to discuss why COVID has been such a disaster for San Francisco’s schools.
To hear more about the fightback in San Francisco, read Asra Nomani’s essay on the anti-Asian bias of the diversity and equity policies pushed by the school board.

SubscribeWell I feel almost too scared to comment. When I posted today on another thread I commented that Asian students were obviously not ‘diverse’ enough and my comment was censored. I think I also commented that they were over achievers …. um … tending to very clever. Note to moderators – I am not Asian. Hmmm.
Seemingly here if your comment gets reported n times (with “n” unknown) it automatically gets blocked, then you have to contact them to have it reinstated. I have seen it happen twice and I find it a very blunt instrument. Also, all the comments that followed gthat one comment get automatically moderated.
My longer comment completely disappeared again! I have reposted and is again “awaiting approval.”
Are other UnHerd commentators getting as sick of this as I am? I usually don’t even write in the UnHerd block anymore because so many have been lost. I usually compose in Pages or Notes so my thoughts won’t be lost if they are “disappeared.”
Gentle Readers–what to do? This is completely unacceptable and getting worse. Can we commentators come up with a strategy to force UnHerd to stop using this form of censorship?
Baring in mind that we all pay a subscription to comment here, then perhaps we can gang together and insist that censorship ceases.
I complained when one of my posts was removed. It was re-instated.
Where exactly do you complain? Also, your random efforts and mine seemingly won’t do the trick. Is there a way for us to band together?
Look, I don’t like or agree with a lot of what appears here–both the articles and the comments–but that’s why I’m here. Isn’t UnHerd, of all places, supposed to be for those who, to quote Apple, “Think Different?”
If someone has an issue with me or my posts, give it a go. But if I use colorful language–I can’t even come close to cracking the AI code–sometimes things are “pending approval” or as here, disappear completely and I think they are rather tame, by my standards?
UnHerd, please hear our plea! Do you think that the author has some kind of “veto power?” I’m not a fan of some of these authors, so is it possible that the author somehow tells UnHerd–flag ALL of his posts for special scrutiny?

Great interview. All the participants noticeably danced around wokeism and CRT and stuck to an agenda of competence at the school board level. Fair enough, but I strongly suspect all those folks have definite opinions about the current woke ideology now being peddled in schools around the country and its effect on their kids’ education.
Even more than the pandemic, CRT in schools, and the general failure of schools to focus on basic education, is the issue that might unseat the Democrats in the midterms.
Plandemic……
The non-woke have hardly taken back the schools. San Francisco is so woke that it is beyond even parody. The 3 people recalled will be replaced by people named by the mayor. If you think that filthy COW will nominate the non-woke, think again.
And Asra Nomani is hardly on side–most of UnHerd is completely fooled by her and those like her. She plays the race/identity card every chance she gets except in this rare instance when it disfavours her.
A longer post pending approval!
This is really becoming disgusting!
