Never mind the fake accent the content of the VP’s speech is vapid and accompanied by sycophantic enthusiasm from the onlookers.

It will be interesting to see what punishment is visited on the the Labour councillor (who has been disavowed by Labour) for suggesting the rioters should have their throats slit and be got rid of.
The Labour PR department clearly saw it was unacceptable but the enthusiasm for what he said evinced by those about him showed that he was not a single bad apple and it seems unlikely that those vocally though less articulately endorsing his suggestion will face any punishment. Are they not like those clicking the like button?
Advocating violence of course is, or should be, in a different class to expressing hatred. If you punish the latter you get the absurd position that has occurred in Germany of a woman expressing hatred of a convicted but unpunished rapist who received a prison sentence while the rapist did not. I have no objection to anyone expressing hatred for me as long as they don’t initiate any action against me.

She is so cringe. I saw a meme about “Oh, Republicans say she never gave birth, why is that relevant, duh?” The ultimate straw man argument

It is indeed hilarious to hear Kamala Harris switch back and forth between her normal speech and the faux southern accent. She seems to be doing it more and more, out of her conscious control.
But fact check: Kamala Harris grew up in northern California (and Canada), not southern California. And for many of those years, she lived in Oakland, California in a mostly minority community, though she was bused to a mostly white school in a desegregation program.
She lived in Berkeley, because her parents were professors there. She was bussed to the Berkeley Flats as part of a voluntary program. The Flats were mainly black and poor, but their schools were excellent. Her parents wanted her to mix with kids who looked like her. (Back then Berkeley was lily white, and I’m pretty sure it still is.)
You got some of Kamala Harris’s background wrong but so did I. My main point was that she grew up in northern California, not southern California as the article says. NoCal, not SoCal, as some say here.
I might add that she spent as many of her growing-up years in Quebec as the Bay Area. Her parents separated in 1970 when she was six and divorced in 1972. When she was 12 she moved to Canada when her mother became a researcher at McGill, though she did visit the Bay Area where her father ended up as a Stanford professor.
I grew up in Berkeley. She grew up in the flats of Berkeley in a mixed neighborhood. The flats were working class at that time. Her parents were not professors, they were graduate students. Berkeley was never and is not now lily white, but the racial mix has changed as Bay Area real estate prices have skyrocketed and immigration has increased. There are fewer white and black people, and more Asians and Latinos.
White guilt fades into utter insignificance next to the guilt of wealthy blacks. Imagine the sheer terror of it – the lingering question: ‘how did you get to be so privileged in a racist society?’. No wonder they are all so desperate to talk about anything except money.

Harris didn’t grow up in Southern California. She grew in Berkeley, which is Northern California, and Quebec, which is even farther north. Fact check. This is the third time I’ve had to correct geographical problems concerning the United States.
Berkeley is significantly closer to the Oregon border than it is to Mexico so, in that way, it’s northern CA. Population wise it is definitely northern CA.
However probably most accurate to say it is West-central California.
Berkeley is in the Bay Area, the largest urban area of coastal Northern California. When people say Central California, they mean the inland Central Valley, a largely agricultural area.

Harris’s lapse into the black “accent “ is hardly something new. Black politicians will do it when their audience is mainly black. Obama did. Oprah does it. It’s pretty normal. Senator John Kennedy uses a thick Southern accent when speaking publicly, especially to his constituents in Louisiana. In private he has no accent. He went to an Ivy League college and Oxford. And like my brother-in- law, his accent went away. Not really news.

‘How black is Kamala/’. That’s the most urgent question facing the world, isn’t it? No, it’s not. The real question is: ‘how significant is insignificance going to be after Nov 5th?’

It’s going to be interesting to see how racist some of Unherd’s authors are going to get in this US election season.
