Pot legalization is a frustrating topic. We have had lots of experience with selling substances. We have the hard-earned lessons of alcohol and tobacco regulation. We have prescription drug regulation. None of these is perfect, but none is out-of-control, either. The only things that are out-of-control are those that have been criminalized.
Pot bears the most similarity to beer: easy to make at home, moderate in effects, cheap, and ubiquitous. Very harmful, too, but under control as much as it can be. But we’ve tried to regulate pot with the “heroin” model. That is the reason for failure. And we know what works.
Meanwhile, fashions change. There are beer trends, wine trends, liquor trends. The smoking trend is generally down. Fitness is sort of up-and-down. Government and ngo education can influence preferences and consumption. That’s been the best success. That’s the best role of government.
Incidentally, SD voted in favor of recreational marijuana in 2020. The Supreme Court struck down the ballot initiative on very questionable grounds, but the popular vote was in favor.

Excellent news. Weed makes its users bored, angry, depressed, boring, listless, paranoid, boring, slow, boring, useless, lazy, lethargic, boring, annoying, vapid, apathetic, boring, boring, retarded, boring, unemployable, boring and boring, as well as raising their blood pressure and rotting their gums. Did I also mention that it makes them really bloody boring?
