Back in the US(A)SR?

Life expectancy in America has now declined for the second year in a row. The reason? A significant increase in suicide, deaths related to opioid addiction and other “deaths of despair”.

During the Cold War, Americans used to note that life expectancy in the Soviet Union was declining while that in the USA was rising. The fact that much of the USSR’s drop was due to deaths from alcoholism and other “deaths of despair” showed that freedom “worked” while communism didn’t. What does it say about my country now that we are seeing the beginnings of a nearly identical trend?
