Tim Farron joined us this week to discuss the speech that has been interesting and encouraging other UnHerd writers this week:
- Two days ago Danny Kruger described it as one of the bravest speeches he’s heard from an MP. And it certainly is quite something for the ex-leader of the Liberal Democrats to implicitly tell people who think of themselves as Liberals – including many within his own party – that they’re becoming thoroughly illiberal in their attitude to Christianity (from which, Farron argued, liberalism and non-conformity had grown).
- And, today, in his Friday column Douglas Murray praises Mr Farron for understanding the difference between what he calls convening liberalism (where all reasonable voices are at least respected) and a campaigning liberalism that, more rights-based, secular and left-leaning, allegedly wants to be very dominant top dog at the expense of other ideas.
