Tim Farron tells UnHerd that modern liberalism has taken an intolerant turn

December 1, 2017

Description

Tim Farron joined us this week to discuss the speech that has been interesting and encouraging other UnHerd writers this week:

  • Two days ago Danny Kruger described it as one of the bravest speeches he’s heard from an MP. And it certainly is quite something for the ex-leader of the Liberal Democrats to implicitly tell people who think of themselves as Liberals – including many within his own party – that they’re becoming thoroughly illiberal in their attitude to Christianity (from which, Farron argued, liberalism and non-conformity had grown).
  • And, today, in his Friday column Douglas Murray praises Mr Farron for understanding the difference between what he calls convening liberalism (where all reasonable voices are at least respected) and a campaigning liberalism that, more rights-based, secular and left-leaning, allegedly wants to be very dominant top dog at the expense of other ideas.

Our podcast begins with a few minutes on the latest Trump Tweet outrage but it’s mainly Tim Farron, liberalism and Christianity.
