This 1904 cartoon of Standard Oil appeared in McClure’s magazine – where Ida Tarbell’s work exposing the company was published. The octopus’ tentacles had encircled Congress (upper left), the state legislatures, and a variety of other businesses and politicians. Still out of its reach was the White House, from where President Theodore Roosevelt crafted his monopoly-limiting reforms.
