I don’t know his music (can’t be bothered as it isn’t a genre I enjoy), but he is a fascinating larger than life artist. I’ll admit to occasionally reading articles about him – they are way more interesting than the Kardashian sludge.

Interesting read, thank you. I find it intriguing that the general consensus was ‘genius’ until he started mentioning God, religion, Trump, etc. and then it’s ‘his music has gone downhill’, ‘he’s crazy’, etc.
Kemi Badenoch, Tony Sewell, Mike Phillips, Calvin Robinson, or Inya Folarin Iman are all welcome to criticise soulless liberalism.

How many Kanye songs can anyone actually name? For me it’s maybe three at a push. And they’re all sh*te. He’s a strange example of someone who’s found success by constant telling everyone he’s a genius, and people went along with it and bought his records
Haha come on! Maybe if he had one or two successful albums before being found out, but even his most recent made something like $2 million dollars on a day 1 launch outside of any streaming platform. I can’t name that many, but I can’t name many Mozart either…
All Falls Down. Celebration. Flashing Lights. All of the Lights. Ultralight Beam. Jesus Walks. Golddigger. I Am a God. Runaway. Homecoming. Black Skinhead. Touch the Sky. Water. No Church in the Wild. Robocop. Jesus Lord. Kanye West is a tortured genius, and yes, he is the greatest pop musician of our time.
No he’s not, since such judgement is subjective – and the fact that you don’t appreciate that there can’t be a ‘greatest’ at any artistic endeavour speaks volumes about your judgement.
I do hope you’re not going to tell us that William McGonagall is just as good as Shakespeare.

You’re absolutrly right about this and it’s t the detriment of the ghetto kids themselves. My nephew (who is mixed race) came up against this culture when he was at school; resisting it made his school-days difficult, so I can see why kids fall in line.

Those are a lot of opinions about someone you know shockingly little about.

Donda, his newest album, is great. I disagree that he has lost his way artistically.
A very empathetic article. Well done.

It’s like Unherd readers like criticism of soulless liberalism until it comes out of the mouth of a black visionary
And just like West fans can’t accept that their hero worship lacks substance. He’s a great example of a bampot.

I can’t name any.
That’s a badge of honour
It does feel that way.

If you didn’t like my comment a downvote would suffice, no need for the name calling mate
That’s thee more than me.
I’ve never listened to any of his music – or if I have heard one of his songs, I didn’t know it was him.

Come on, surely you’ve heard of Kanye’s Requiem in D Minor. What about his Zauberflote?

I’m sure you’re consistent in calling out any appraisal of cultural quality (or lack thereof) whatsoever
